Let’s go Up The Creek…

Let this image fill your mind… One river, three stages, four days, loads of good music and comedy and 2000 festival goers with a passion for some of South Africa’s best music in common!

From 2-5February 2012, the usually quiet campsite close to Swellendam will once again be transformed into a slightly surreal spot of revelry, raging rock and soulful tunes, performances from another planet and shenanigans of the type that you can only pull off when you’re safely tucked in next to the mighty Breede River for four days.
Yup – four. For R100 extra, die-hard Creekers can pull in on Thursday, 2 February for a chilled out preview gig at the bar stage. You can choose the best spot for your tent and kick-start the weekend’s carousing so that the place is cooking by the time the rest of your friends arrive. The main festival weekend is from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 February.

I personally wish I could be down there to experience what I know will be one incredible show, especially when I hear of the MK floating stage!!

The line up for Up the Creek 2012 is nothing short of fantastic and in typical Up the Creek tradition we will be running live music on 3 stages throughout the weekend: The Bacardi Main Stage, the MK River stage and the all-night-long BOS Breede River bar stage.

The line up for the weekend includes:

Kongos, aKing, Akkedis, Black CatBones, Blues Broers, Cameron Bruce, City Bowl Mizers, Fox Comet, The Great Apes, Holiday Murray,Hot Water, Karen Zoid, Louwtjie Rothman, Machineri, No One’s Arc, Piet Botha,Taxi Violence, Wrestlerish, Jeremy Loops, Luna Paige,  Shadowclub,Sterling EQ, Andra, Peachy Keen, AC/DC Tribute, Southern Gypsey Queen.

What to bring to Up the Creek:

Your ticket, ID Book, tent, mattresses, camping chairs, torches, sleeping bag, duvet, sun block, insect repellent, toilet paper, camera, cap or hat, something warm, towel, pillow, headache pills, money, sunglasses, condoms, swimming kit, anything that floats – lilo, paddle, boat – and lastly, your friends, but do not be scared to make new friends!

If you don’t want to pitch your tent, just pitch up for your pre-booked tented accommodation. Check out the tickets page on www.upthecreek.co.za for the different camping options available.

Up the Creek 2012 promises to be yet again one of the highlights on the Festival Calendar in the Western Cape.

Rolling Stone Magazine to Launch in SA.

Attention all music fans!

The legendary music, culture and current affairs magazine Rolling Stone launches in South Africa on Wednesday 23 November 2011. Covering everything from young visionaries and icons to politics, movies and more, Rolling Stone believes in music as a unifying force.

Boasting a 50/50 split of local and international content and showcasing South Africa’s diverse creative talent, Rolling Stone South Africa engages local audiences with stories that resonate in their own experiences and lives.

“It’s about respect – for our subject matter and our readers. We focus on real, in-depth pop culture and current affairs stories, not tabloid headlines and hype. You’re not going to get this kind of editorial content in any other magazine in South Africa. We will be featuring kwaito alongside rock, jazz alongside pop, and hip-hop alongside house. That potential, to start cross-pollinating cultural conversations, is one of the most exciting things about the magazine.” says Rolling Stone South Africa Editor-In-Chief Miles Keylock.

Founded in 1967 by Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone remains the world’s leading music and pop culture publication. Whether the subject is music, politics or movies, millions of readers in 16 countries across the globe turn to Rolling Stone each month to keep informed.

The magazine features in-depth, up-close and personal profiles on cultural icons and ground-breaking artists, cutting edge current affairs and provocative pieces on TV, radio, fashion and entertainment trends.

Rolling Stone SA will be available at the following outlets:

Exclusive Books, CNA, Musica, Pick ‘n Pay Hyper, Look & Listen, Spar stores nationwide and select outlets.

I am very excited at the launch of this publication, cannot wait to see what is holds in store.

MK MVP Winners

Following the success of the 2010 debut of MK’s MVP (Music Video Project) the music channel decided to up the ante for this year’s project by commissioning 12 South African artists (compared to last year’s 10 artists) to each produce a music video.

To be eligible to enter, each artist had to team up with a South African production company and submit an original track, a concept and treatment for a video, as well as their proposed budget. Elements such as the choice of song, band/artist positioning, visual treatment of the proposed video and how well the concept complemented the MK brand and the appeal for its viewers, were all looked at by an MK judging panel when choosing the winners.

The winners for MK MVP 2011 are:

  • ·         Ashtray Electric, Bittersweet Manipulator to be produced by Motion City Films
  • ·         Chocolate Stix, Schizo to be produced by Mannequin Pictures
  • ·         Dance You’re On Fire, Oh Love to be produced by The Now Museum
  • ·         Double Adapter, Eat You Alive to be produced by Mustard Post Productions
  • ·         Duimpie Se Maat, Moonshine to be produced by Tankfilms
  • ·         Goodluck, Harlem to be produced by Dirty Soul Productions
  • ·         Isochronous, Destiny to be produced by Silver Lining Pictures
  • ·         Krimineel, Gebed van ‘n Reeksmoorde to be produced by The Film Factory
  • ·         Lark, Brave (Haezer Remix) to be produced by Tevi Baitz and Topher Henny
  • ·         Moses Metro Man, Samoerai to be produced by DoktrineGeontwerp
  • ·         Mr. Cat & The Jackal, Try to be produced by Cape Town Film Studio’s
  • ·         The Frown, The National to be produced by Magic Factory

When choosing the winners, MK set out looking for diversity in genres while staying within the main genres that are current and appealing to the MK target market – with a strong inclination towards rock, alternative, indie, electro and dance. This year also saw something unique in terms of the winners: 5 of the winning artists are female. And while this was not a deciding factor when judging the entrants, it is something important for MK and their direction as a channel, as they have  recognised a need for more female artists on the channel and in the industry overall.

Stephan Potgieter, Content Executive for MK, is thrilled to see how well the Music Video Project has been received so far and is eager to see what the 2011 winning artists come up with. “MK has always been a very proud supporter of South African music, and the channel saw it was necessary to offer not only financial aid to artists, but also guidance, assistance and involvement by professionals in their respective industries – in this instance, the production field.

I personally think this is a great choice of artists. I have been fortunate enough to see almost all the acts on stage at one point. Very much looking forward to see the end results.

Symphonic Rocks into Johannesburg in 2011..

Last year saw the first production of the Symphonic Rocks in Cape Town with an A-List of South African artists on stage alongside, a 65 piece symphony orchestra.

This year, due to popular demand Symphonic Rocks will be hitting the Johannesburg skyline as well.

In association with 5FM, this year sees 9 different South African artists take stage at the Heineken® Symphonic Rocks. Johannesburg better get ready, with a sold out show in Cape Town last year, this is surely to be one of the music events to attend.

Just Jinjer, Watershed, Louise Carver, aKing and the Gang of Instrumentals took stage last year in Cape Town playing their well known songs with a 65-piece orchestra.

This year will be one different, with a mixture of genre’s, a variation of adult contempary, R&B, hip hop electro, pop to rock, this show is definitely one for the books!

Line up is made up the very talented Arno Carstens, Loyiso, Just Jinjer front man Ard Matthews, Zebra and Giraffe, CrashCar Burn, Tumi & the Volume, Flat Stanley. Johannesburg will also have Freshly Ground’s lead vocalist Zolani Mahola on the bill; as well as the Locnville twins performing. All this with the 65-piece band playing along. With a line up like you can understand why last year’s event was a massive success.

  • Tickets cost R225 in Cape Town and R225, R250 and R275 in Johannesburg at Computicket.  Bookings open on Friday 15 July 2011. Capacity at each of the venues is limited so fans are advised to book in advance.
  • Visit www.symphonicrocks.co.za in the coming weeks for update on the event.

You can certainly only begin to imagine how amazing this show will be. I remember reading online the reviews regarding last year’ event and all I could think was “lucky Cape Town“. I will certainly be making my way to the Big Top Arena at Carnival City to witness this event live for myself!!

Watch this space as we will have more and more info available as the event gets closer.
